Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5k Was Wonderful

May 14th, 2012

Posted by Josh Perks

I need to start by thanking all the amazing people who helped make this years Wa Wa Wally Waddle a truly smashing success. To the Pie makers and timers, runners and spectators, fundraisers and sponsors, big kids and little kids, first time waddlers and long time road racers I could not do any of this without you. You have all help grow the Waddle into the incredible success that it is today, thank you.

With your help we raised over $4000 dollars to help send kids from the Mid-Hudson Valley to YMCA Camp Segowea. I encourage you to visit the Camp Segowea website to learn more about our camp and consider sending your child there for a life enriching experience they will never forget

Over 200 runners participated in the 3 Waddle races. 173 runners finished the 5k ranging in age from 10 to 73 years old! 21 kids ages 5-13 ran the mile race and well over 30 kids as old as 9 and as young as 2 ran the 100 yard dash with Wally the Turtle.
As Waddle tradition dictates home made pies were given out as prizes to the overall and age group winners. Our Segowea Alumni baked over 20 pies, those that were not given out as prizes were given away during the post award free pie raffle. 10 lucky raffle winners went home with home baked pies! Lana of Bella Cakes made turtle cupcakes for all the kids who ran the 100 yard dash and mile.

Mike Insler and Marisa Strange have won the Waddle all 3 years!

Another Waddle tradition was upheld with local racing legend Marisa Strange, and out of towner Mike Insler each winning for the 3rd year in a row. While Marisa cruised to a 40 second victory over 2nd place Female Rachel Sleeter, Mike Insler needed a course record 16:13 to hold off local stand out Mike Chow who finished just 3 seconds back.

Mile Winners Isabelle Hatch and Griffin Sarachek

The kids 1 mile (which might have been 1.1 miles) was won by 10 year old Isabelle Hatch and 12 year old Griffin Sarachek. The 9 and younger age group was won by Isabelle Serrano and Achille Sarachek.
Full results for both races are linked below along with a link to all the photos taken by Bob Kopak.

3rd Annual Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5k

April 2nd, 2012

Posted by Josh Perks

Returning for its third year, the Wally Waddle is fast becoming a local favorite for both its location and its awards. The Wally Waddle will be held on May 13th at Vassar Farms in Poughkeepsie, NY and is run primarily on a gently rolling dirt road. In keeping with Waddle tradition instead of medals, ribbons or trophies overall and age group 5k winners will be awarded fresh baked pies. There will also be a free pie raffle after the award ceremony with your bib number serving as your raffle number.

In addition to the 5k race, there will also be 2 free kids’ races. A 1 mile for kids 13 and younger and a 100 yard dash for kids 9 and younger which will be held 30 minutes before the start of the 5k. Last year we had over 30 kids participate in the 2 races and hope to grow that even more this year.

All of the money raised by the Waddle goes toward providing scholarships for local children to attend Camp Wa Wa. Last summer 6 area children were able to attend camp Segowea who would not otherwise been able to because of your support.

Please come out on Sunday May 13th to support the Waddle and Camp Segowea. You can run on a scenic course, compete for pies, and know you’re helping give a local child the life-changing opportunity to attend summer camp.

Please visit the Wa Wa Wally Waddle Website for more information

To register download a race flier or visit www.mhrrc.org to register online

A race day raffle will be held for a two night stay at Cold Moon Farm Bed & Breakfast in Vermont.  Raffle tickets cost $5 or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at the race registration table.

2nd place- 7% of the pot

3rd place- 5% of the pot

76% of the pot will go directly to Camp Wa Wa Segowea Capital Campaign. (2% will go toward paypal processing)

Additional Notes about the Tournament:

You will not be able to make your picks until Sunday night March 11th when the teams are finalized.

Wally Waddle Race Report

May 22nd, 2011

Posted by Josh Perks

Despite a morning downpour, the 2011 Wa Wa Wally Waddle at Vassar Farm had a strong turnout with over 150 registered participants. The rain stopped in plenty of time to make for lovely running conditions. Male and female winners from 2010, Mike Insler and Marisa Hanson, successfully defended their titles this year. Justin Jackson, age 11, was the victor in the mile, with a non-waddling time of 6:58. Around 20 happy age group and raffle winner went home with fresh-baked pies to celebrate the day.

The race and the pie prizes are a lot of fun, but the ultimate goal of the Wa Wa Wally Waddle is to raise money for scholarships to YMCA Camp Wa Wa Segowea. This year, we raised enough money to send 6 local children to spend a week playing in the woods, swimming in a lake, and building confidence through cooperative outdoor activities. We are grateful to our generous sponsors for their help in making these life-changing opportunities possible: Finnish Solutions Construction, Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club, Morris Associates Engineering Consultants, Nick Stoner Inn, Soul Dog Restaurant, Tubby’s Bathroom Resurfacing, Dutchess Recreational Vehicles, Hooker Avenue Travel, Dr. Gerber and Dr. Bromley Podiatrists. We also extend a big thanks to the many race-day volunteers, the participants, and the organizers of the Saturday evening Pasta Dinner.
We hope to see even more people at race day next year! Get ready for another day of pies and photo opportunities with our big turtle mascot!
